I began my publishing career as a proofreader, working for Kogan Page (business titles), St James Press (academic tomes) and BFI Publishing (film books). I have kept my hand in ever since, wielding my red pen, pencil and eraser (and more recently my on-screen mark-up tool) in my enthusiasm to get everything just right.
An Associate of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders, I have proofread scores of travel books over the years. A fantastic challenge for any proofreader, travel guides are full of detailed information, need lots of pernickety styling, and demand a huge amount of fact-checking and excellent general knowledge.
It's not all travel, though. I've proofread everything from a technical (and beautiful) guide to digital photography to a custom co-production between Rough Guides and the Royal Mail about business communications. Recent favourites have included Sounds Like London, a history of black music in London, published by Serpent's Tail; an autobiography, Coffins to Cosmology, from the independent Ondine; and, for Profile Books, Inferno Decoded, a companion to Dan Brown's best-selling Inferno.
